Some examples of the kinds of EcoArt projects EcoArt SoFla has catalyzed:
Emphasis in all EcoArt SoFla program areas will be on permanent integration of EcoArt into the ongoing organizational planning and programming of existing environmental advocacy, scientific, governmental and cultural organizations in South Florida.
EcoArt SoFla began, as soon as the organization launched, under the name South Florida Environmental Art Project, in March 2007, to instigate projects that demonstrate our commitment to “mainstreaming” our efforts into existing organizations. Individuals and organizations interested in EcoArt project development partnerships increasingly contact us with EcoArt SoFla projects. The following are currently in various stages of development:
- Involvement of EcoArt SoFla Board and Advisory Committee members on county and municipal “green task forces.” This involvement has resulted in the first “green” ordinance (municipal climate action plan) to provide incentives for integration of EcoArt into new or retrofitted green buildings and infrastructure.
- Restoration of the first EcoArt project in South Florida. The work is located in an urban public park with a major stormwater retention function. In collaboration with regional and municipal government agencies, and with neighborhood and environmental advocacy organizations and financial support from Keep America Beautiful, Inc., Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc., the City of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County.
- Development of an EcoArt community garden project in a CRA-designated business district. This project has initial funding from the Quantum Foundation and will tap the experience and talents of residents and business owners in a five square mile area of West Palm Beach designated Northwood GREENlife District.
- Partnership with the Deering Estate Park in Miami-Dade County on a community education/engagement and artist EcoArt apprenticeship emphasizing social sculpture skill acquisition. NEA funding is being pursued to initiate this project.
- Development of EcoArt lecture and film series, individual lectures and informational sessions, and apprenticeships for professional practicing South Florida-resident artists interested in engaging EcoArt as a new creative direction, and for potential stakeholders and the public at large.
